Smashed by Christian A. Dumais, straight from his KDP cover file, in the bookshop set.

All the way round.

The back, the spine, the page edges and the front, from one file. Drag the book, or pick another of Christian’s.

Every frame here is a real render from the studio: the same 3D book you get, with the spine sized from the full wrap and the page edges drawn sheet by sheet.

30°

Made from the file you already have.

A flat cover on a store page shows what the book looks like. A book on a shelf shows it’s real: something with a spine, a weight and pages.

Give DudeCovers the full wrap you sent to the printer, back, spine and front in one image, and the spine is sized from the artwork. KDP paperback and hardcover files work as they are, PDFs too: the trim, the binding and the bleed come from the file.

Only have the front? That works too. The spine and back take the colour of the cover’s edge, and the thickness comes from your page count and paper.

Put it somewhere real.

Five 3D sets you can walk the camera round, and 22 real rooms where your book lies on the table at the room’s own angle. Your whole series goes in them too. The other books suit your genre: made-up titles, or classics long out of copyright, never a living author’s book.

A room for your genre.

Photo scenes made for the story: a candlelit table for horror, a neon city desk for sci-fi, a playroom for picture books, a tavern map for fantasy, morning linen for romance, a detective’s desk for crime. Two rooms each, your real 3D book in them.

Horror

Picture books

A made-up fantasy novel standing on a mossy stone in a misty forest beside an old key

Fantasy

Romance, thrillers and every other room: all the photo scenes.

Light it like a room.

Daylight, a warm lamp or low evening sun, from the left, in front or the right. Let it come through a window, blinds or leaves and the shadows fall across the shelf and your book, and bend over the spines.

In a photo scene your book takes the room’s light instead, and you can nudge its warmth and brightness until it sits in the picture.

Paperback, hardback, jacket. New, or well loved.

The same cover file makes every edition: a paperback, a hardback with a rounded spine and headbands, or a hardback in a dust jacket with its flaps.

Matte, gloss, or linen for a woven cloth cover. Wear it in for a copy that’s been read: rubbed corners and edges, creases down the spine, yellowed pages and a nicked jacket.

Your whole series, in one picture.

Add each book’s cover, tick the ones you want, and show two to six of them together: side by side, fanned like a hand of cards, stacked, spines out, or in a slipcase with your series name on it and one book pulled half out. Each book keeps its own trim, binding and pages.

The series goes in every scene too: face out in the bookshop, spines out on a shelf, a pile of each on the new releases table, on a photo’s table, or on Your backlist, a shelf of only your books.

The full wrap you sent to the printer, the KDP PDF, or just the front. PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF.

  2. 02

    Make the book

Paperback, hardback or dust jacket, the trim size, the pages and paper, matte, gloss or linen, new or well loved.

  3. 03

    Put it somewhere

A backdrop in your cover's colours, a shelf, a bookshop, a table, or a real room. Then turn it to the light and export.

Six books by Christian A. Dumais.

His real cover files, dropped in as they are: KDP PDFs and PNGs, and an older full wrap. The spines, trims and page counts come from the files.

What’s in the studio

Spine from your artwork

A full-wrap file sets the spine width, so the title on the spine lands where it's printed.

KDP files as they are

Drop in the KDP cover PDF: the trim, the binding and the bleed come from the file.

All the way round

The front, the spine, the page edges and the back, turned with a drag.

Five 3D sets

A library shelf, a bookshop bay, a new releases table and a home bookshelf, filled with made-up books in the genre you pick, or classics long out of copyright, your backlist (a shelf of only your books), and a new set every week.

22 photo scenes

Everyday rooms and rooms for your genre: a candlelit table for horror, a playroom for kids, a tavern map for fantasy, a neon city desk for sci-fi. Your book lies on the table at the room's own angle, with its shadow.

Light like a room

Daylight, a warm lamp or evening sun, from either side, through a window, blinds or leaves.

Your series and box sets

Two to six of your books together: side by side, fanned, stacked, spines out, or in a slipcase with your series name on it, on a backdrop or in any scene.

New, read, well loved

Rubbed corners, a creased spine, yellowed pages and nicks in the jacket, for a copy that's been read.

A turning book video

Your book, or your whole series, turning slowly, spinning to show the back, or swaying, on a plinth or in a scene, exported as an MP4.

Open books

Your book lying open on a spread from your own interior, pages arching from the spine; left face down with its cover showing; or opened right out as a cover spread, back, spine and front in one piece.

Matte, gloss or linen

Gloss catches the light, matte stays soft, and linen gives a woven cloth cover for a special edition. All three are free.

Ebooks

Your cover on an e-reader in black and white e-ink, a colour e-reader or a tablet, on its own or beside the book, or a page of your interior on the screen.

Bookmarks

Your printed bookmark standing up out of the pages or lying on the open spread, or a satin ribbon marker.

Launch graphics

A headline, a staff-pick note or a review on the image, rain or paint over it, your name as a watermark, sized for Amazon A+, BookBub and social.

Straight answers.

What cover file should I upload?
The full wrap if you have it: the one image with the back, spine and front that you sent to the printer. The spine is sized from it, so the title on the spine lands where it's printed. KDP paperback and hardcover files work as they are. A front cover alone works too; the spine and back take the colour of its edge.
How is the spine width worked out?
From a full wrap, by its shape: the file is as tall as the book, so its width minus the two covers is the spine. From a front cover, by the page count and paper you choose, at KDP's thickness per page (white 0.0572 mm, cream 0.0635 mm).
Is it free?
Yes, to start. The 3D book, as a paperback or hardback turned up to 45° either way, and export at up to twice the size are free, with no account. Linen covers and a plinth are free too. Pro adds turning it right round to the back and the page edges, the open book on your own spread (face down or as a cover spread too), a bookmark or ribbon, sprayed, gilt or deckle page edges, your ebook on an e-reader or tablet, the turning book video, the dust jacket, a read or well-loved copy, several books in one picture (a series or a box set), the scenes, the full backdrop library and three times the size. Make a free account and every Pro option is yours for a 7-day Pro week, no card.
Can I use the images on Amazon, social media and my website?
Yes. They're yours to use anywhere: launch posts, ads, newsletters, your author site and A+ content. Keep to each store's own rules about what may appear in product images.
Is there a watermark?
No. Not on anything you make with the free options, in your free Pro week or on Pro.
What are the scenes?
Two kinds. 3D sets are built in the studio: a library shelf, a bookshop bay, a new releases table, a home bookshelf, your backlist (a shelf of only your books). You turn the camera anywhere and set the light. Photo scenes are 22 real rooms, everyday rooms (a reading room, a nightstand, a café, a windowsill, a bookshop table, a writer's desk) and rooms for your genre (sci-fi, horror, kids, fantasy, romance, crime, cookbooks and summer reads): your book lies or stands on the table at the room's own angle and casts its shadow, and you drag it round the table.
Are there scenes for my genre?
Yes: two photo scenes each for sci-fi, horror, kids' books, fantasy, romance, crime and thrillers, cookbooks and non-fiction, and summer reads. Set the shelf's genre and its rooms come first in the Scene tool, marked For your genre.
Are the other books on the shelf real?
Your choice. By default their titles and authors are made up in the style of the genre you pick, so your book is the only real one in the picture. Or pick Classics: real books long out of copyright (Austen, Dickens, Poe and the like), titles and authors only. Either way no living author's book appears in your marketing.
Can I show my whole series?
Yes, with Pro. Add each book's cover, tick the ones you want (currently up to six books at once), and show them together: side by side, fanned, stacked, spines out, or in a slipcase with your series name on it. Each book keeps its own size, binding and pages. Your series goes in the scenes too: face out in the bookshop, spines out on a shelf, a pile of each on the new releases table, a shelf of only your books, or on a photo's table.
Do you use AI?
Not in the app. Your book is a real 3D model made from your file, and the 3D sets are built, not generated. The photo scenes are photographs we made once, ahead of time; nothing is generated from your cover.
